“I wrote a big note to everybody — no matter what, I won’t be here. I’ll be there during the day, but I’ll be leaving at five no matter what happens.”
Observant patrons at Newmarket’s The Buttery Restaurant will notice a change in routine on Saturday evening as chef Carlo Rovella takes the night off to head for Woodbine Racetrack and the $2.4 million Ontario Sires Stakes Super Finals.
Rovella’s absence from the popular Newmarket dining spot is the result of his two-year-old pacing colt OK Fantastic’s entry in the year end championship. After missing the middle of the season due to sickness, the gelding has finally started to regain his form and heads into the season finale off an easy win in an Oct. 29 overnight at Woodbine and a pair of runner-up finishes in the last Gold Elimination and Final of the season.
“It’s looking promising, we’re going to keep our fingers crossed,” says Rovella, who shares ownership of OK Fantastic with Mardon Stables of Loretto. “We were happy the way he went (Oct. 29). He [paced] well and responded coming for home; we were very happy with the way he raced.”
Alliston resident Bruce MacDonald conditions OK Fantastic, who has tallied one win, four seconds, two thirds and earnings of $98,900 in his first 10 starts. The son of Mach Three and Fanciful will be looking for a second victory from Post 5 in Saturday’s talent laden field, with Oakville resident Rick Zeron at the controls.
“Everything has worked out so far, all we need is some racing luck on Saturday and we’ll see what happens,” says Toronto resident Rovella. “It’s not going to be easy. There’s a lot of good horses in there, so whoever wins it will have to earn it.”
Racing action gets under way at 7:30 pm on Saturday evening at Woodbine Racetrack and the eight Super Finals will be featured in Races 2 through 5 and 7 through 10OK

Georgian Downs will showcase Ontario’s finest freshman pacers on Saturday night and the connections of two local entries are hoping their horses can finally show off their full skill set over the Innisfil oval. The two-year-old pacing colts will lead things off in races two and five, and owner Marv Chantler is looking for an improved effort from OK Fantastic in the second $40,000 Gold Elimination. In the September Gold Series at Mohawk Racetrack, OK Fantastic finished fifth in his elimination and sixth in the final. The September outing was only the gelding’s second at the provincial stakes level. After a third in the elimination and second in the final of the season opener at Mohawk Racetrack, the Mach Three son was felled by a virus that knocked him out of action for a month and is still having an impact on his training and racing routine. “I’ve been racing horses for 45 years and he was the fastest two-year-old I’ve ever owned,” says Chantler. “We just have not been able to get him back to where he was in July. “He’s a very fast colt, but the sickness totally derailed him.”In his first three lifetime starts OK Fantastic delivered one second and two thirds, but in the four starts since he fell ill, the youngster’s best effort was a second in a Sept. 14 overnight event at Mohawk Racetrack.Paul MacDonell will steer the winner of $47,400 from post five in Saturday’s fifth race, and Chantler is hoping the pair can earn a spot in next weekend’s $130,000 Gold Final.“We’re hoping for better things to come, either Saturday at Georgian, or the next Saturday, or in the Super Final,” says the Loretto resident, whose Mardon Stables shares ownership of OK Fantastic with Carlo Rovella of Toronto. “He has a lot of ability. He has that speed built in; we’ve just got to get it out of him again.”Alliston resident Bruce MacDonald trains OK Fantastic, who was an $85,000 purchase out of the 2011 Forest City Yearling Sale. Down memory lane September 1972 .Marv Chantler starts his driving career

A young local reinsman Marvin Chantler of Newton Robinson has been a frequent visitor to the winner's circle of late .He has piloted the family owned and now 6 year old Mighty Lucy Bay to 3 straight wins in as many starts during the month of September . This mare is trotting bred by Riddell Todd out of Lucy Bay but is a pacer . She debuted as a two year old racing for Wes Coke and took a freshman record of 2:10 back in 1968 in her only victory that year . This filly is the first venture for the senior Mr. Dewitt (known as Dee) Chantler who has long had an interest in the sport undoubtedly from living so close to the farm of The Hon. Earl Rowe .He has recently had the pleasure of seeing his mare race close to home with his son handling the reins .
